Cabinet work is usually the biggest line in a Lakeland kitchen remodel — and the biggest chance to save without regret. Refacing and replacement are both legitimate answers; the trick is matching the answer to the boxes you actually have.
Open every door and drawer. Solid, square boxes with clean joinery, no swelling at the sink base, no musty softness under the drain — those boxes are candidates for refacing. Sagging shelves, particleboard swollen by an old leak, racked corners, or a layout you hate at the structural level — those point to replacement. Florida humidity makes the sink base the tell: it fails first, every time.
New doors and drawer fronts, matching veneer or laminate on the exposed box faces, new hinges and hardware — the kitchen reads brand-new in days, not weeks, typically at roughly half to two-thirds the cost of replacement. The layout stays exactly as it is. That’s the limit and the point: refacing is a finish upgrade, not a floor-plan fix.
If the layout is wrong — island needed, soffits wasted, drawers wanted where doors are — refacing locks you into the old room in new clothes. Replacement resets everything: box quality, drawer banks, tall pantry storage, and the layout itself. In a house you’ll keep for ten-plus years, doing the layout right usually beats saving on the boxes.
Plenty of Polk County remodels mix the two: keep and reface the perimeter boxes that are sound, replace the sink base and add a new island to match. A pro who does both will price it both ways — and the written scope should say exactly which boxes stay and which go.
